How to count business days correctly, with weekends, holidays and the start-date trap
What counts as a business day, why five business days from Monday can mean Friday or the next Monday, how holidays shift the count, and a worked ten-day count.

A business day is a weekday that is not a public holiday, so counting them means skipping every Saturday, Sunday and holiday in the range. That sounds simple, yet “within 5 business days” lands on two different dates depending on whether the day you start from is counted, and a single holiday in the middle pushes everything by a day. This guide sets out the rules, shows the ambiguity with dates, and walks through a ten-day count across a holiday so you can reproduce it on a calendar.
What counts as a business day
In the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most of Europe, business days are Monday to Friday excluding public holidays. Which holidays depend on where you are. The business days calculator applies the eleven US federal holidays with their observed dates, the England and Wales bank holidays for the UK, Canada’s federal statutory holidays, Australia’s national holidays and Germany’s nine nationwide holidays, and it lets you switch to a Friday and Saturday weekend for countries that rest on those days.
Regional holidays are the first complication. A state holiday in Victoria or a provincial day in Quebec is a business day to the federal government and a closure to a local firm. The second complication is company practice: many US offices close on the Friday after Thanksgiving even though it is not a federal holiday. When a deadline matters, add those dates yourself rather than assuming the official list is the whole story.
Inclusive versus exclusive counting
Take “5 business days from Monday 19 October 2026”, a week with no holidays. If you count Monday itself as day one, the days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and the deadline is Friday 23 October. If Monday is the day the clock starts and counting begins the next working day, the days are Tuesday to Friday plus the following Monday, and the deadline is Monday 26 October. Same phrase, three calendar days apart.
Spreadsheet functions such as NETWORKDAYS count both the start and end dates, which is the right convention for “how many working days are in this period”, for example for payroll or project effort. Deadlines phrased as “after” or “from receipt” almost always mean exclusive counting: the day you receive something is day zero and day one is the next working day. The calculator has an “include start date” checkbox for the between-dates mode for exactly this reason, and its add-days mode always starts counting from the day after the start date.
How contracts and shipping estimates phrase deadlines
Read the wording, not just the number.
- “Within 10 business days of receipt” starts the day after receipt and excludes weekends and holidays.
- “Within 10 days” without a qualifier usually means calendar days, so weekends count. Some contracts define “days” in a definitions clause; check it.
- “By close of business on the fifth business day” fixes a time as well as a date.
- “Ships in 3 to 5 business days” refers to when the parcel leaves the warehouse, not when it arrives. Transit time is added on top and carriers often quote it in business days too.
- “Delivery in 2 working days” from a carrier usually excludes the day of collection and any day the carrier itself does not operate.
If a document is silent on whether the start date counts, the safer reading for you as the person who has to comply is the earlier deadline. If you are the one setting the deadline, write it out: “10 business days, not counting the day of receipt, excluding US federal holidays”.
Worked example: ten business days across a holiday
Start on Friday 20 November 2026 and count ten business days forward using US federal holidays, with the start date not counted. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November that year.
| Date | Weekday | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 21 Nov | Sat | weekend |
| 22 Nov | Sun | weekend |
| 23 Nov | Mon | business day 1 |
| 24 Nov | Tue | business day 2 |
| 25 Nov | Wed | business day 3 |
| 26 Nov | Thu | Thanksgiving, skipped |
| 27 Nov | Fri | business day 4 |
| 28 Nov | Sat | weekend |
| 29 Nov | Sun | weekend |
| 30 Nov | Mon | business day 5 |
| 1 Dec | Tue | business day 6 |
| 2 Dec | Wed | business day 7 |
| 3 Dec | Thu | business day 8 |
| 4 Dec | Fri | business day 9 |
| 5 Dec | Sat | weekend |
| 6 Dec | Sun | weekend |
| 7 Dec | Mon | business day 10 |
The tenth business day is Monday 7 December 2026, which is 17 calendar days after the start: 10 working days, 6 weekend days and 1 holiday. Without Thanksgiving the answer would have been Friday 4 December, and if you had counted the Friday start as day one it would also have been Friday 4 December, so two different mistakes produce the same wrong date. Note that the calculator treats Friday 27 November as a working day, because it is not a federal holiday; if your counterparty closes that day, add it as a custom closure and the deadline moves to Tuesday 8 December.
Holidays that fall on a weekend add another twist. The US observes a Saturday holiday on the preceding Friday and a Sunday holiday on the following Monday, so Independence Day 2026, which is a Saturday, is observed on Friday 3 July. The UK, Canada and Australia move weekend holidays to the following Monday, and Germany does not move them at all, so a German holiday on a Saturday simply disappears from the working-day count that year.
Calendar days, business days and working hours
Calendar days are the simplest measure: 20 November to 7 December is 17 days whatever the weekday pattern, and that is what the date duration calculator reports. That tool also splits a span into weekdays and weekend days, but it knows nothing about holidays, so use it for durations and the business days calculator for deadlines.
Working hours are a third unit, used in service-level agreements. A “48 working hour” response time on an 8-hour business day is six business days, not two calendar days, and a ticket raised at 4 pm on Friday has used one hour by the end of the day and resumes at 9 am on Monday. Over the example above, ten business days is 80 working hours, while the 17 calendar days it spans contain 408 clock hours. Always convert to the unit the agreement is written in before promising a date.
Quick checklist
- Confirm whether “days” means calendar days or business days.
- Decide whether the start date counts; write it down if you are drafting.
- Use the holiday list for the right country and add regional and company closures.
- Check for weekend holidays that have moved to a Friday or Monday.
- For shipping, add transit time to dispatch time, both in business days.
- Verify the result on a calendar by ticking off the days as in the table above.
